Choosing the Right Gas Cooker: Sizes, Brands, Installation & What to Know

Choosing the Right Gas Cooker: Sizes, Brands, Installation & What to Know

If you’re replacing a Gas cooker, it’s rarely as simple as swapping like for like.

At Wellingtons Electrical in Erith, we speak to customers every day who think they know what they need, until we talk through size, installation, and options like lids and oven type.

And when it comes to gas cookers, there are a few key things to get right from the start.

Sizes: 50cm, 55cm or 60cm Gas Cookers

Gas cookers typically come in three widths:

If you’ve got the room, 60cm gas cookers tend to be the best option, especially for families or regular cooking.

Single vs Double Oven (Gas)

Single oven gas cookers

  • Simple and cost-effective
  • Great for smaller households

Double oven gas cookers

  • Much more flexibility
  • Cook multiple dishes at once
  • Ideal for busy kitchens

One of the most popular choices we see in-store is a 60cm double oven gas cooker, particularly from Hotpoint, as it gives you that extra capacity without going to a full range cooker.

AEG vs Hotpoint (Gas Cookers)

AEG gas cookers

  • More premium feel and build quality
  • Cleaner, more refined design
  • Often preferred if you want something long-term

Hotpoint gas cookers

  • Excellent value for money
  • Simple, reliable and easy to use
  • Much wider choice of models and finishes

With Hotpoint, you’ll typically find more availability in:

  • White
  • Black
  • Graphite / silver

If you want choice and value, Hotpoint is a great option.
If you want something more premium, AEG is worth considering.

Do you want a lid?

This is something many customers specifically ask for.

Gas cookers are more likely to come with lids, which:

  • Keep the kitchen looking tidy
  • Give you extra worktop space when not in use
  • Add a clean finish to the appliance

If a lid is important to you, we’ll make sure we show you the right models.
